Example
I recently became a Christian. Do I have to go to church?
Answer: Yes and no.
YES -As you are a very new Christian a church can help you understand the Holy Bible. You can also fellowship with other people who will care for your Christian growth. However, it must be a church in which you feel at home (comfortable). So you may need to try one or two different churches. If someone helped you become a Christian you can ask them where they would recommend that you try.
NO - you do not need to go to church but you may find it harder to understand all the new things you will be finding out if you try to do it on your own. If you cannot find a suitable church perhaps you can find a small house group to attend.
I am bored with Church. Is there anything I can do?
Yes - lots. It will depend on you, your needs and to some extent on your personality. If you are bored because you feel you have heard everything that church or minister has to teach then try a different church. If the church is not meeting your needs either spiritually, emotionally or intellectually then try another church BUT do not lose contact with the first church until you are settled somewhere else.
Personality types - I am not going into the different types here but it is true that we each have different needs and some people will be more easily satisfied is one type of church than an other. Some people will never be truly satisfied in any church and that is not a fault of the church. This type of personality needs to understand themselves and learn how to live with this trait. It may not be just church that does not satisfy them. I have wondered if St. Paul has this personality trait as his writting often seems to be suggesting a way of living which is an ideal to which most of us will never get close. So read what Paul has to say in the New Testament and understand that church will never be perfect until Jesus returns!
I did something that my previous church thought was wrong. And so do I. Can I go to a different church?
The whole purpose of the message of Jesus is to tell us that we can be forgiven. Unfortunately Christians and Churches have great problems applying this to someone who is a Christian and yet makes a 'great big public sin'. Our advice is to try a number of churches. Some will be more welcoming than others. This is not to diminish the fact that what you did was wrong but we all sin and do wrong. The difference is that my sin is private and people know about yours. Sometimes people in the new church will be need convincing that you have changed and / or 'repented' of your sin. That will take time. If they cannot forgive you and forget about it the please do get out of that church and find a church which will accept you. You will need fellowship and good sound Bible teaching to be able to get back into a close relationship with Jesus and 'church' should be the place to help you.
